Service, Leadership, and Education in Funeral Service
Robert “BBJ” Boetticher Jr. has dedicated more than three and a half decades to the funeral, cemetery, and cremation profession, building a career centered on service, leadership, and, most importantly, the development of people through education. Across every stage of his career, he remains committed to helping individuals grow, strengthening teams, and preparing the next generation of funeral service professionals to lead with skill, compassion, and purpose.

BBJ’s journey in the profession began at age 15, mowing lawns during the summers at Mount Moriah and Freeman in Kansas City, Missouri. What began as a summer job soon became a lifelong calling, following in his father’s footsteps. After graduating from high school, he attended mortuary school where he began building the foundation for a career that would span nearly every operational and leadership level of the profession.

Over the course of his career, BBJ has served in progressive leadership roles across multiple organizations. His experience across funeral homes, cemetery, and crematory operations has given him a broad view of the profession, but his greatest passion has remained constant: investing in people. He has consistently focused on coaching leaders, developing teams, and creating opportunities for professional growth through practical education, mentorship, and hands-on learning.

A defining chapter of BBJ’s professional impact has been his more than decade-long involvement with the Cremation Association of North America (CANA), including service as President. In that role, he helped champion professional education and organizational sustainability, most notably through the development and expansion of online learning. His contributions helped grow what is now the largest online certification program for crematory operators in North America, expanding access to education and elevating professional competency across the industry. He has also spoken internationally on cremation trends, data analytics, and evolving consumer expectations, always with an eye toward helping professionals adapt, learn, and lead in a changing environment.

This commitment to education also complements BBJ’s service as a board member of the Pierce College of Mortuary Science. His career-long focus on workforce development, leadership training, and professional education aligns naturally with Pierce’s mission to prepare future funeral service professionals for meaningful and impactful careers. Through both his board service and professional leadership, BBJ continues to advocate for accessible, relevant, and high-quality education that strengthens individuals and advances the profession as a whole.

In addition to his leadership and educational contributions, BBJ brings a strong operational and technological mindset. He has supported large-scale software implementations, digital transformation initiatives, and process improvements that enhance efficiency while keeping the needs of field teams front and center. His ability to translate complex systems into practical tools for learning, development, and performance has become a defining strength of his leadership.

BBJ’s career reflects a simple but powerful belief: when you invest in education, you invest in people—and when you invest in people, you strengthen the future of funeral service.
